Strominger / Journal of Reproductive Immunology 62 (2004) 17–18 polarized toward GM-CSF production compared to their CD4+ peripheral blood counterparts. Moreover, in contrast to their peripheral blood counterparts that secrete more of the Th-2 cytokine IL-4 than IFN, decidual CD4+ iNKT cells exhibited a striking Th1-like bias, secreting more IFNthan IL-4. The expression of CD1d on trophoblasts and the polarization of cytokine expression by decidual iNKT cells suggests that maternal iNKT cell interactions with CD1d expressed on invading fetal cells may play an immunoregulatory and/or developmental role at the maternal–fetal interface. Thus, at least these two subsets of decidual lymphocytes may have an important role in maternal fetal interactions.

Endometrial Granulated Lymphocytes in Women Suffering Spontaneous Early Pregnancy Loss

Spontaneous abortion is the most common complication of pregnancy. Several lines of evidence indicate that immunologic effector cells may play a role in the pathogenesis of idiopathic repetitive abortions. Leukocytes form a substantial proportion of stromal cells in decidua and the endometrial granulated lymphocytes (eGL) is the predominant decidual leukocyte population in the first trimester o...

I-32: Implantation and Recurrent PregnancyLoss

Background: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), defined as 3 or more consecutive pregnancy failures, is a common and distressing disorder. Chromosome instability in the conceptus is the most common cause whereas uterine factors are invariably invoked to explain nonchromosomal miscarriages. These uterine factors are, however, poorly defined. Materials amd Methods: Laboratory-based analysis of endome...

Prostaglandin E2 in Soluble Factor-Mediated Immune Suppression by First Trimester Decidual Cells

Several studies have shown that decidual tissue produces soluble factors which can mediate a variety of immunosuppressive activities. In order to assess whether prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) was present in supernatants produced by explant culture of 10 human specimens of first trimester decidua. The effect of the supernatants from the two different series (with and without indomethacin treatment) ...

Immunopathological Aspects of Decidual Tissues in Women with First-Trimester Recurrent Spontaneous Abortion

Background/objective: Studies of the decidual leukocyte populations in women suffering from spontaneous early pregnancy loss may provide insight into immunpathological aspects and even cast light on the etiology of recurrent spontaneous abortion. Methods: In order to clarify the immunological role of endometrial leukocytes in repetitive abortion of unknown etiology, a comparative analysis of phe...

I-33: Oxidative Stress Responses in EarlyPregnancy

Background: Survival of the conceptus is dependent on continuous progesterone signaling in the maternal decidua but how this is achieved under conditions of oxidative stress that characterize early pregnancy is unknown. Materials and Methods: Laboratory-based analysis of endometrial biopsies and primary endometrial cultures. Results: Using primary cultures, we show that modest levels of reactiv...
